A bit of history …
The Golden Gate Bridge construction began on 5 January 1933 and it opened in 1937.
It’s a suspension bridge that links San Francisco Bay to the Pacific Ocean and which crosses the Golden Gate strait.
It’s one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and the United States. Also, in 1937, the American Society of Civil Engineers has declared it one of the Wonders of the Modern World.
Until 1964, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world, at 4,200 feet (1,300 m).
The Golden Gate Bridge is 30 m wide and 1966 m long. It offers 6 traffic lanes and 2 pedestrian zones on each side.
Consisting of 129.000 km of cables, it is easily recognizable with its orange color chosen by Irving Morrow to match its environment.
My point of view
I think the Golden gate bridge is an emblem of San Francisco. It’s an entire part of the landscape; I can’t imagine this city without this famous bridge.
The whole world knows it, even if they have never visited San Francisco. Also, I can say it creates a relaxing and charming atmosphere beautifying the environment of San Francisco.
